New Jersey is For Lovers (of Garbage)

This week’s exciting episode features frank and honest discussion about a wide variety of topics interspersed with malfunctioning sound effects and some bitching about Time Warner Cable.

What you see here is pretty much my view of the podcast, except sometimes I look up and talk directly to Jose instead of hiding behind my pop screen and taking a quick nap while he talks about Tara and Eggs or whatever. The tissues are because Jose is allergic to my cat, who is imprisoned in a cat-proof cell for the duration of the podcast. Here you can see Jose banging on the sound effects computer and getting mad that he cannot play farting noises at the appropriate time.

I will be in lovely New Jersey next week, so there will be no new episode.

Arguing About Capes

New episode is up. We argue for a while about whether or not Jon Favreau is a good director. Jon Favreau the actor/director, not Jon Favreau, speechwriter for Obama, who I think we can all agree probably isn’t a very good director and would have totally bungled the action scenes in Iron Man 2.

More Epicness

Maybe this is what Doug had in mind when he mentioned on the show this week that the new Thor trailer lacked some “epic” moments. I’m not entirely sure if all of the CG effects in the world can make Thor more epic than this, they should just give up now.

Comic-Con, Regurgitated

Over here on our Libsyn page (or right up there with that funny arrow), you can check out episode one hundred and eleven. It’s a whole lot of Comic-Con news this week, although almost none of it is actually about comics. We get into an argument over young Jeff Bridges in Tron, and I am pretty sure I totally won that one.

True Love

We opened the show this week with some harsh audio which accompanied the picture above. I’m always happy to see shows push past limits in what you can do with drama and visuals. Some would look at it as a cheap grab for attention. I feel like it another example of genre fiction doing what it does best, using the new rules of a fantastical universe to depict emotion and story. Yea it’s pretty whacked out image, but it works at  leaving an indelible memory in the viewer. That is good T.V.

We also talk a little bit about the WW costume. I could go off for a few more paragraphs about how ridiculous and hyperbolic some of the internet reaction has been, but I will recommend that you listen to the guys at iFanboy and their latest podcast. They have a nice handle on what’s going on with the Amazon princess. Suffice it to say she hasn’t had this kind of attention in a long time and that is not a bad thing. Not bad at all.

Red Dead Discussion

New podcast up there, on that grimy gray bar with the arrow on it.

We talk a lot about Red Dead Redemption this week, and if you own an Xbox and haven’t played it yet, you should definitely pick it up assuming you are an adult who appreciates good storytelling. This is definitely not a kids game, and while you could say the same thing about GTA4, with its prostitution and its rampant murder, GTA4’s story was decidedly juvenile, comparable to any number of R rated films that twelve-year-olds are typically watching these days. In fact, they ripped things right out of a lot of those films and didn’t seem to care. On the other hand, Red Dead, with its prostitution and rampant murder, tells a much more mature story that contains actual themes and undercurrents.

It’s the kind of thing that would likely go over the head of most kids (I say most, because there are smart kids and dumb kids). And really, without the storyline you have an average open world, a simple shooting mechanic, a gripping herb picking simulation, and no boss battles. It’s the story, the experience, that sells this one, not a gameplay gimmick, which is a rarity in gaming and something we haven’t seen since… Bioshock? Unless I’m missing something.

If I had used a few more big words and some italics, this blog entry could have been on Penny Arcade.

And now games…

So Doug and I got a chance to spend some time at E3 this year where we had a good chance to see a lot of cool stuff this year, so we spent a great deal of time on the show this week talking about all that we saw and there was a lot to see.

Here’s probably one of the best things at the show (that we could not see as it was shown behind closed doors).

Portal 2 –

Goddammit Jose

It takes like three minutes to do the blog. There is a new episode available at that nice link above. Or you can go here. Next week we will be talking about nothing but video games, as we got to go to E3 this year. 3DS! Kinect! Move!

Edit —

You forgot the Mortal Kombat video. You’d remember that if you took more than 3 minutes.

New episode! Party like it’s 1,999,999!

Get it? Because she travels through time.

After Careful Consideration…

Well it’s been a full week now since the Lost finale and as you can imagine Doug and I go a few rounds discussing the merits and failings of the big finale on the show this week. I’ll leave you to guess who liked it and who did not. We also have the usual Stargate : Universe recap and a few notable stories including the passing of Dennis Hopper and Gary Coleman. However, what interested me the most was our Doctor Who conversation this week. While this weeks two part conclusion proved to be nothing all that fantastic, that in itself seemed to be interesting to me. Moffat was supposed to be the savior of Doctor Who from the dregs that RTD had taken it to. However it seems as if he’s just made it kinda mediocre and that to me is almost worse.
